COST OF A NUTRITION FOOD BASKET IN UKRAINE
BY ALEKS KRAVCHENKOAs in most of developing countries minimum monthly salary in Ukraine does not cover the cost of a nutrition food basket.
Just so you know a nutrition food basket is referred to the cost and affordability of healthy eating. In other words, it is the amount of money you need to have to be able to eat healthily during one month.
A friend of mine who works as a taxi driver has got a wife and two kids. When I asked him how much money he spends per month just to cover food and utility bills for gas, electricity and water, he said it was around 2500 UAH (US $312).
According to my girl friend, one needs around 35 UAH ($4.5) to buy food for one day. For that kind of money he or she would be able to buy one raw/uncooked chicken, one kilo of potatoes, one kilo of tomatoes and something to drink. Now you multiply that by 30 days and you will have 1050 UAH per month, which is around US $133. This does not include public transportation cost, utility bills and cost of clothing.
Cost of some grocery products:
1 loaf of bread | 3 UAH (US $0.35) |
1 kilo (2 pounds) of noodles | 6 UAH (US $0.76) |
10 eggs | 6 UAH (US $0.76) |
1 kilo (2 pounds) of good sausage | 80 UAH (US $10) |
1 kilo (2 pounds) of veal | 50 UAH (US $6) |
